About this Course

The Astronomy Lab course is a one-semester course that offers an in-depth exploration of astronomical thought throughout history, from ancient skywatchers to modern astrophysics. The course is structured around two semesters, each focusing on different topics. During the first semester, students will investigate themes including skygazing, moon phases, and the Copernican cosmos. The second semester will cover topics such as Isaac Newton’s moon studies, stellar aberration, and Hubble’s law. The curriculum includes a range of activities, such as applying the experimental method, composing activity reports, engaging in peer review, and presenting results.

This course places a significant emphasis on technical drawing and requires students to complete weekly assignments, which will be scanned and submitted for credit. By the end of the course, students will have gained expertise in applying their knowledge of astronomy and the scientific method to design and carry out data collection and analysis, interpret data, present results, and engage in scientific discourse. The Astronomy Lab course is scheduled to be offered during the 2025-2026 school year, and it is an excellent fit for students who have a solid foundation in mathematical and scientific concepts.
