About this Course

The AP World History Modern course, taught by Jessica Newman, is a full-year course designed for high school students in grades 9-12. The course covers significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 to the present, with a focus on historical thinking skills and reasoning processes. The course is equivalent to an introductory college or university survey of Modern World History, and is organized into commonly taught units of study with six themes that build conceptual understanding. The course will utilize the Canvas platform and the textbooks "AMSCO AP World History Modern 1200 to the present" and "Five Steps to a 5 AP World History: An Essential Coursebook" by Ethel Wood (3rd edition). The course is asynchronous with weekly Zoom meetings, and students are expected to read content daily and complete assignments related to historical thinking and writing skills. The course is limited to 30 students, with an audit option available, and tuition is $775 (or $750 for early bird registration). Mrs. Newman currently resides in Chelsea, Alabama with her husband and two children, and has a Masters in Education from the University of Montevallo and a Masters in History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has been an AP European History Reader since 2012 and has 20 years of experience teaching history and speech/debate. Mrs. Newman enjoys shopping for antiques, genealogy research, cheering for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, UAB Blazers, and taking care of her two rescue cats.
