About this Course

The online course offered by John Kernion is a calculus-based Physics C program, consisting of Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism courses, which can be taken as full-year or semester-long courses. The course is designed to prepare students for AP Physics C exams administered by the College Board and follows the same scope as a single semester college physics course for engineering students. Students will need high-speed internet access, a scientific calculator, a device to scan documents in .pdf format, and an email address. The course is designed around self-study, complemented with a discussion forum, and live (optional) video meetings every other Wednesday at 12:00 noon (US Eastern Time). Students should have completed Physical Science, Chemistry, and Algebra 2, with concurrent enrollment in a first-year calculus course.

The Mechanics course will begin on August 21, 2024, for the first semester and August 28, 2024, for the full-year course, while the Electricity and Magnetism full-year course will start in August. The second semester E&M course registration will open in November. Tuition varies between $850 (Early Bird) and $875 (Regular) for the Mechanics course, and $775 for the E&M course. A math-readiness test is required prior to applying, and prospective students must have prerequisite knowledge in mathematics, including calculus, as well as self-discipline to work independently. The course includes video lectures, lab activities, and assessments, with a thorough review prior to the AP Physics tests. Dr. John Kernion, the instructor, is an experienced AP Physics teacher with a background in engineering and education.

This is an outstanding, rigorous AP Physics C series. Dr. Kernion teaches the series through PA Homeschoolers, but uses a course platform that he built called Physics-Prep. You can either take the class synchronously with Dr. Kernion (PA Homeschoolers) or take it on your own (self-paced) by working independently through Physics-Prep.

Due to some scheduling issues, my daughter worked through the AP Physics C Mechanics materials of Physics-Prep on her own. (Not part of the PA homeschoolers class). She found the content to be challenging, interesting, and clearly presented.

In the second half of the year, she took AP Physics C E&M synchronously through PA Homeschoolers. The course still uses Physics-Prep, but Dr Kernion offers live online office hours, pacing, and personal feedback on assignments. The turnaround time for feedback / grading was very rapid - sometimes within a few hours.

My child felt very well prepared going in to the AP exams - she said the problems were relatively easy compared to what they have been doing in Dr. Kernion's class. She loved the class and is now planning to study physics in college.

The class as a whole has a high rate of scoring 4-5 on the AP exam (the PA Homeschoolers website has the most up to date statistics).

The course is best for students who are able to work independently and don't need a lot of face to face accountability.
