I’m currently halfway through this course and can report that it is an excellent choice! Mrs. Inspektor gives detailed and specific instructions and feedback, while maintaining an overall focus on the big picture. The course balances AP-style essays and more creative writing, so this class is more than just test prep.

Expect to write at least two paragraphs every day (more on many days). I’ve been spending one to two hours a day to complete all the assignments; I have done no work on weekends.

Mrs. Inspektor and Mrs. Chan grade promptly. Typical turnaround is less than a week after the due date.

Daily workflow (no live meetings or recorded lectures; completely text-based and asynchronous):
(1) Read the day’s “Morning Message.” These contain the bulk of the actual instruction. Responses to the Morning Message are sometimes required.
(2) Write responses to any discussion questions due. Discussions involve responding to other students in a thread.
(3) Work on any essays or major assignments. These are generally due on Sunday night.
(4) Book clubs are an optional part of the course. Students whose parents don’t opt them out of this course component will meet with a new small group every five weeks to discuss a book of the group’s choosing.

I’ve been quite pleased with the assignments. None of the essays feel like busy work, and Mrs. Inspektor provides enough instructions for you to apply to the writing process that you won’t feel like you’re floundering or trying to guess how things should sound.

The class is also structured such that students can get to know each other to some extent.

Perhaps most importantly, after starting this class, I’ve enjoyed writing for the first time in several years. I highly recommend Mrs. Inspektor!
