This course, suitable for rising 7th-9th graders, introduces students to the history and literature of the ancient and classical world, encompassing social, political, religious, scientific, economic, and technological aspects. The course focuses primarily on the Classical Mediterranean and Europe, with additions from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Americas when relevant. It aims to provide an integrative experience of history and literature by encouraging students to understand the 'loves' of past people and cultures through their works. The course is taught in a seminar-style, driving discussions through carefully crafted questions and assessments include response papers, essays, quizzes, and participation marks.
The course is paired with a middle-school literature course, taught by the same instructor, and students who take both receive a discount. It is independientes and history is suitable for students with proficient reading and writing skills, as well as the interest and capacity for engaging in discussions about literature and history. Students are expected to cultivate note-taking, apply teacher critiques, adhere to deadlines, and take initiative in asking questions.
