In the course "ASL 1", students delve into the world of American Sign Language (ASL), exploring its history, culture, and unique grammar structure. They learn a wide range of vocabulary, including greetings, colors, emotions, numbers, days of the week, and verbs. The curriculum is supported by ASL Deafined, an award-winning video dictionary featuring over 18,000 words and created by native signers. Twice a semester, students complete projects such as signing a self-introduction and researching notable deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. The course also introduces students to ASL literature, art, and songs.
The lessons are designed for content retention, combining history, culture, grammar, and reception practice. The course is subscription-based and available at a discounted rate through True North Academy. Additionally, students must purchase the "Self-Paced ASL" course. Interaction with a native ASL signer is provided once a month to pratique language use. Required materials include "Self-Paced ASL", "ASL Homeroom", and a free Flip account for video assignments.
