About this Course

The course "Get to Know American Hist & Lit" is an American literature class for middle-school students (rising 6th-8th graders) with some integration of American history to provide a richer understanding of the literary works. Students will explore historical fiction, poetry, folk songs, and fables, engaging with these texts through writing, special projects, and Socratic discussions to develop critical thinking and discussion skills. The literature is contextualized with historical eras and key events to create a well-rounded appreciation of American history and literature. The course assumes proficient reading and emerging writing skills, alongside interest in growing discussion skills, and is designed to cultivate scholarly habits such as annotating, outlining, and adhering to guidelines. It is offered as a standalone literature study or paired with an American history course for a discount.
