About this Course

This online course, designed for 9th-10th graders, is an in-depth exploration of American literature spanning two centuries. Students engage with a selection of classic American novels, short stories, poetry, and essays, following a chronological sequence that mirrors the nation's historical growth. Each quarter, they'll write response papers and essays, culminating in a final project: a class presentation outlining American literature's evolution and reflection of cultural shifts. The course integrates American history and encourages critical discussion, with a reading commitment of approximately 1.5-2 hours per week plus occasional homework. It carries one high school English or literature credit.

This literature course is paired with an American Government course, offering a discount when both are taken together. Students must have completed an 8th-grade writing course, demonstrating competency in vocabulary, essay-writing, and text reflection. The course aims to refine scholarship skills such as active note-taking, adhering to deadlines, and class preparedness. Faith is integrated organically through charitable readings and examining texts from a robustly Christian perspective.
