About this Course

This is a live online American Literature course designed for 9th-12th grade students. The course offers a comprehensive survey of American authors, poets, and essayists, and covers various literary genres and techniques. Students will develop skills to interpret different literary works and understand the values and beliefs of the country conveyed through literature. The course includes studying novels, short stories, and poems from early Native American writings to modern essays.

The course is structured as a 32-week program meeting once a week on Tuesdays, with recorded sessions available for missed classes. Students can expect to spend 5-10 hours per week on reading assignments, discussions, homework, and essay writing. The course aims to expand students' vocabulary and improve their verbal and written communication skills. Students can earn college credit by taking the American Literature Clep Exam upon completion.

Honors level students will complete two longer interpretative papers and have additional essay assignments and supplementary reading suggestions throughout the course.
